Normal for burn after tampon use?

Well I'm 16, a virgin, and have had my period for 3 years. i have always used pads because tampons have just seemed scary to me. I know it's normal for a cardboard tampon applicator to hurt, especially to someone like me (virgin). but i tried using one to get used to the feel so i could go swimming tomorrow, but ever since i took it out there has been a sore feeling in the vaginal opening and it burned when i went pee right after. is this weird or normal?!?!?!?!?!
